George Avvakoumides: fresh from the sea
When we see fast ostentatious cars on the racetrack, we rarely bother with what goes on under the hood. Under that light- and dark blue vinyl skin, lies something more amazing than you could ever imagine ...
George Avvakoumides (#16) is a familiar face at the racetrack. And, this new year has also ushered in his new look—fresh from the sea Ocean Basket sponsored Porsche 911 RSR. "Eat well and live long," they say. With motorsport, good food and a beautiful ’74 Porsche 911 RSR, I can’t see why not. Maybe, this is the real answer to longevity. One spin in this custom-built relic around town could see me get married (and divorced) three times in one day. Hope George can assist me with the latter?
The innards of the old/new Ocean Basket '74 Porsche 911 RSR:
This classic Porsche was build and developed by Auto Cure Midrand (Markus Minihold). Sporting a 3.5 litre flat six engine, with PMO carbs and twin spark ignition. Output is approximately 340 HP, measured at the flywheel (corrected to sea level), with a compression ratio of 10.8:1. It has a G50 short gearbox; the short relates to the length of the gearbox which comes from a '87 – '89 Porsche 911 Carrera.
Already you can see: to get this beauty off the starting grid, takes more than just a Porsche and a run of colourful vinyl.
Specifications:
Brake system: Porsche 930 Turbo, with dual Tilton master cylinders. Suspension: Fox Racing coilovers, with remote reservoirs and single adjustable damping. Rear trailing arms are also from a Porsche 930 Turbo. It also sports custom side shafts (from the same make Porsche); and a full Chromoly roll cage. Besides a powerful engine you also need some really good grippers: Widened Fuchs wheels that run on 16" Avon slick tyres, with 10.0" wide front tyres, and 12.5" rear tyres.
You will not only find fresh from the sea at Ocean Basket, but also every time George Avvakoumides comes around in his '74 Porsche 911 RSR, stirring up a mean hunger.
With a head full of vital specifications, that will make for great dinner conversation; I know what I’m having for dinner tonight ... —Godspeed! •
